According to sources, Nasser was stabbed multiple times during an altercation with another inmate at a federal prison in Florida. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed to NPR that an inmate was assaulted around 2:35 p.m. ET Sunday, requiring immediate "life-saving measures."
Two sources connected to the prison confirmed to The Associated Press the attack happened Sunday at United States Penitentiary Coleman in Florida. However, they were not authorized to discuss details of the attack or the ongoing investigation publicly and spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity.
According to one of the sources, Nasser was stabbed in two places: In the back and in the chest.
The AP reports that the prison is currently in the midst of staffing shortages. The two officers assigned to the unit where Nassar was held were working mandated overtime shifts. One of the officers in Nassar's unit had worked three straight shifts, totaling a 16-hour day, said a source. The other had worked a double.
As for Nasser's condition, he is alive. According to the sources, as of Monday, he is in stable condition.
This isn't the first time Nassar has been assaulted in prison. In May 2018, while serving time in an Arizona prison for child pornography charges, he was assaulted by another inmate. He did a brief stint in a Oklahoma facility, before being moved to his current prison.
