Husband Charged With Murdering Wife on Street Right After She Dialed 911
The woman’s husband was charged with murder in her death.
An Arkansas doctor called 911 last month to report her husband being aggressive but was found dead in the street just moments later with a knife stuck in her neck, authorities said.
The husband, Marcus McBurney Joiner, 40, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, was charged with capital murder in the death of Dr. Amy Joiner, 39, in mid-April. Here's what you need to know about this brutal mystery.
Amy Joiner called 911 on April 16 to say Marcus Joiner was drunk and acting aggressively. Police described him as 6 feet, 4 inches tall and 223 pounds. A 911 dispatcher, who was not identified, heard a male voice say, "You wanted it like this" on the call.
Amy Joiner was an alumna of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and worked as a partner at Northwest Arkansas Pathology Associates in Fayetteville for several years. "All of us here at Northwest Arkansas Pathology Associates are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Dr. Amy Joiner," the firm posted on Facebook.
"She was a valued member of our team here at Northwest Arkansas Pathology Associates since 2016. She was a joy to work with and was loved by everyone here not just for her dedication to her profession, but also for the caring manner in which she lived her life and for the kindness she showed all those who had the opportunity to interact with her."
Officials said Amy Joiner called 911 just before she was killed at about 9:30 p.m. on April 16. The 911 dispatcher heard screams and then silence. Fayetteville police officers arrived to find her in the street with a knife in her neck.
An officer could hear a 911 operator still talking on Joiner's cell phone, which lay in the street next to her. A comparison of the officer's body camera video with the 911 call revealed that the officer arrived only seconds after Amy Joiner was attacked.
Marcus Joiner, wearing only jeans, was kneeling over Amy Joiner and either stabbing or punching her in the street, a neighbor told police. He then walked back into their house before coming back out to surrender to the police.
Marcus Joiner had a stab wound on the left side of his chest, cuts inside both hands, and a swollen right hand, police said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police booked him into Washington County jail on April 20.
Marcus Joiner stayed in custody on a $750,000 bond. On Monday, he pleaded not guilty during his arraignment. His next court date is on July 11.
