Over the weekend, the White House was shockingly evacuated. Why? According to a spokesperson for the Secret Service, white powder was found somewhere inside the government building and the current home of United States President Joe Biden. Here is what you need to know about the incident.
On Sunday, a white substance was found in the White House. After the discovery, the discovery, the White House was evacuated, with the Secret Service describing it as a "precautionary closure."
On July 5, the Secret Service confirmed to CNN that they had the white powder, which was found in a small zipped bag, tested in a lab. It came back positive for cocaine.
A source also told CNN that the cocaine was found near the ground floor entrance to the West Wing. They added that it was found near a location where people on tours of the White House are asked to leave their cell phones before going on a tour of the West Wing.
At the time of the evacuation, Joe Biden was not at the White House. He spent the weekend with his family at Camp David, returning to the White House Tuesday morning.
"As we celebrate our nation this Fourth of July, I'm thinking of the countless service members who sacrifice so much to keep us safe. We will always be in debt to those who defend our nation and democracy around the world," he tweeted.
Several Republican politicians took aim at Biden after the incident. "They never found cocaine in the Trump White House! The Bidens are unfit to live in the White House!" Indiana congressman Jim Banks, an ally of former president Donald Trump, tweeted.
"Is this rock bottom yet or how much worse is it going to get?" Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene added.
According to the group, they are trying to figure out who brought the powder into the building. "The item was sent for further evaluation and an investigation into the cause and manner of how it entered the White House is pending," the Secret Service said.
