New data reveals the cars most likely to be stolen. Is yours on the list?
You might assume that the car thieves target the most expensive luxury automobiles on the market. However, this isn't the case. This week the FBI released a list of the most popular cars stolen in the United States, as they also announced that motor vehicle thefts posted a double-digit jump year-over-year in 2022. Is your car on the list?
According to the FBI auto thefts spiked 10.9% from 2021 to 2022 in the U.S. Overall, "nearly a million" cars were stolen in 2022.
In April, the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) put together a report of the five cars most likely to be stolen in the United States. The Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat (model years 2020-2022) had the highest relative claim frequency for theft.
Another Dodge also made the list. The second most likely to be stolen car was the Dodge Charger HEMI.
The most likely to be stolen luxury car? The Infiniti Q50 4dr, according to the report.
A third Dodge made the list. However, this one isn't a truck. The Dodge Challenger was another popular car to steal.
Finally, the most expensive car on the most likely to be stolen list was the Land Rover Range Rover 4dr 4WD.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) also put together a list in July of the three models most favored by thieves in 2022. The first one was the full-sized Chevrolet Pickup.
Also, the NICB claimed that the full-sized Ford Pickup was in the top three.
Rounding out the top three was the Honda Civic, a small sedan.
The Honda Accord was the fourth most popular car targeted by thieves per the NICB.
The fifth and final car on the list was the Hyundai Sonata.
Kias and Hyundias were likely targeted as part of a social media TikTok challenge that went viral, the report noted.
Almost 70,000 individuals were arrested in 2022 on grounds of auto theft, according to the FBI. Three-quarters (78.3%) of arrested car thieves were men.
Carjackings also increased 8.1% year-over-year in 2022, with a total of 25,400 reports. They most commonly occurred at transportation hubs or outdoor public locations.
Already nearly half a million vehicles have been stolen in 2023, according to the NICB.
