Ever stayed in a hotel where the room service offerings were shockingly paltry? Some people have, and have had no compunction about making their requests known, no matter how bizarre. Hotels.com released its first annual Room Service Report earlier this month, which listed some of the most exotic things available in hotels worldwide—and on the flipside, some of the strangest guest requests. Read on for seven of them, ranked from unique to the very most unusual.
7
Eggless Shakshuka
One guest requested shakshuka without eggs, not realizing that it was like asking for an egg-free omelet—or just a cup of Ragu. Shakshuka is a traditional Middle Eastern meal of poached eggs simmered in a spiced, fragrant tomato sauce, and it's found its way onto many a hip brunch menu in the past few years.
6
Bison
It's unclear if this guest was requesting a bison burger or the entire animal, but that's what Hotels.com reports. The prairie buffalo meat has its devotees, particularly among paleo and keto dieters who appreciate its high protein content and concentration of omega-3 fatty acids. But for the time being, it's safe to assume that if bison isn't on the menu, the kitchen isn't hiding it somewhere.
5
Rice Bowl For A Dog
There's no rule that you can't order off the room service menu for your traveling pet. But if you make a special request, a hotel kitchen is bound to raise an eyebrow. Unless you're staying at a hotel that designates itself "pet-friendly"—those hotels can offer a long list of amenities for Fido, from walks and treats to special menus and on-site vet services, depending on the location.
4
No-Egg-White Omelet
Some people don't like egg-white omelets. Like really, really don't like them. But this guest was either failing to convey that their egg dish must contain the yolks—or saying all they wanted was the yolks. Late-night host James Corden recently got into tabloid trouble for sending back his omelet at a New York restaurant, claiming it was basically all egg yolks; this inspired People magazine to try and make an egg-yolk-only omelet. If you're curious, they figured it out.
3
Blowfish
This guest was either asking for the hangover supplement marketed under that name—or the potentially fatally poisonous Japanese delicacy.
2
Melted Ice Cream
Melted ice cream came in at #2 on the list of strange requests. And although it might be considered an eccentric menu item, some people swear by it. Melted ice cream can be used to make French toast, cakes, hot chocolate, and more. Who knew?
1
Diet Water
Yep, diet water. The site named this one the number-one strangest room service request received. To be fair, with the huge number of flavored and specialized waters hitting the market, perhaps this guest thought they couldn't be too careful. Or they saw a scene on a rerun of Parks & Recreation (featuring Diet Water Zero Light, only 60 calories) and thought it was real life.
