Callous Thieves Steal Belongings From Newlywed Couple After Husband Drowns in Hawaii
After Steven Phan drowned off the beach in Hawaii, his belongings, including his rental car, were stolen.
Newlyweds plan their dream honeymoon to celebrate the beginning of their lives together – not the end of them. However, tragedy struck a California couple honeymooning in Hawaii, ending one of their lives. Steven Phan drowned while snorkeling in the ocean with his wife of three months. To make matters even worse, while his newly widowed wife dealt with the horrifying aftermath, all of their belongings, including their rental car, were stolen from the beach.
Married three months ago Steven and Brittany opted to spend their honeymoon in Hawaii. On June 1, the couple drove to Electric Beach for a day of snorkeling. However, tragedy struck, and Steven drowned in the Pacific Ocean.
According to reports, the couple was snorkeling right offshore when the man disappeared underwater. A spear diver pulled him to shore. Bystanders attempted CPR before first responders arrived.
"It's tragic to see these circumstances like yesterday. This is a place where we have long known we need more of an ocean safety presence," John Titchen, chief of Honolulu's Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division, said. "And so any time we see a case like this before we can get set up and get in here and get established, it's heartbreaking."
"As If this could not be worse, all of Brittany and Steven's belongings were stolen, the thieves took their cell phones, wallets, money, clothing, they even stole their car rental," a GoFundMe page set up for the couple reads.
"That's just unreal, you question that person as a human being," spear fisherman Shin Tamashiro, added about the theft. "People, they don't have the decency, integrity, it's just morals I guess."
"As the Phan and Myers family reel from this tragic and sudden loss, the last thing that they should be worried about is the financial burden. All donations will go directly to Brittany Myers Phan to help cover funeral and memorial costs and mitigate any unforeseen costs related to Steven's passing and help support them in the coming months," the GoFundMe page says.
