Prince William "Flew off the Handle" After Friends Mocked Kate, Insider Claims
After Prince William’s friends made fun of his then-girlfriend, he came to her defense in a major way.
Prince Harry isn't the only one who is incredibly protective over his wife. While the Duke of Sussex has been more publicly vocal when it comes to anyone who has not-so-nice things to say about his spouse, according to royal experts, Prince William is also willing to lash out at anyone who goes after his wife, Kate Middleton. A new report maintains that prior to making things official with his wife, he "flew off the handle" after friends mocked the future Queen of England.
Royal commentators maintain that in the early days of the relationship between Prince William and Princess Kate, friends of Will's made some nasty comments about her and her family – and Will wasn't having it.
Katie Nicholl, author of The New Royals, revealed details about the alleged incident during Vanity Fair's DYNASTY podcast. She says that Wiliam's "snooty" friends would whisper "doors to manual" when she arrived at the West London nightclub, Boujis, referring to her mother's former job as an airline stewardess.
Kate "never rose" to the "derogatory" comments, but William lept to her defense, making his feelings "clear" that he wouldn't put up with any criticism about Kate or her family.
"When Kate felt isolated from his life, he confronted the 'friends' who were not only abusive toward her but also her mother, mocking her English [and] calling her 'door to manual' as she used to be a hostess," said royal expert Canellecitadelle on Twitter. "[William] made it clear he didn't tolerate disrespect to [Kate] or his in-laws."
A royal aide told the Sunday Times Magazine last year that the nickname was hurtful to Kate, but she tried to ignore it. "It was never water off a duck's back, but she has extraordinary strength of character and resilience. I've never once seen or heard of her losing her temper."
Another source told the Daily Mail in 2021 that William will "fly off the handle" if he believes his wife is being disrespected. "He flies off the handle at any sign of Kate being patronized and stamps that out very quickly. It's one of his triggers," they said. "Over the years, many people have come up with great ideas for her, but if they are put across in a dismissive way, they've got pretty short shrift from him."
