King Charles and Camilla Accused of "Kick in Teeth" to Staff Over Pay Gap, Say Insiders
According to a new report, a male senior employee is paid more than double a female with a similar job.
If it seems like men get paid more than women, it isn't in your imagination. According to a Pew Research Center analysis, in 2022, women earned an average of 82% of what men earned. In 2002, women earned 80% as much as men, meaning that not much has changed in 20 years. According to a new report, the issue of the gender pay gap has recently created quite a stir at Buckingham Palace after an annual report revealed that a male staff member makes significantly more than a senior female member.
According to an annual report released in June, King Charles's private secretary, a man, is paid more than double the salary of Queen Camilla's top aide, who happens to be a female. People aren't happy about it, to say the least.
Per the report, Sir Clive Alderton is paid between $394,000 and $403,000, while Sophie Densham receives somewhere between $173,000 and $182,000.
"I'm really shocked by the disparity and I'm astonished by Sophie's salary — that is a kick in the teeth," a former senior courtier has revealed. Densham, a mother in her forties, is "a real grafter" according to the source, who maintains she has a "massive [and] bloody busy job."
The Times source maintains that Densham is "almost always by Camilla's side on official engagements," whereas Alderton only attends the King's "most high-profile outings."
"Whether you think there's a disparity in the pay because of their sex, rather than their seniority, there is a question there," said another source. "Sophie is known as being a very capable and dedicated support to the Queen."
Sir Alderton is "provided with housing for the better performance" of his duties, the report also states. Alderton, 56, has been working for King Charles since 2006 and lives at Marlborough House, a short walk from his office at Buckingham Palace office. The undisclosed housing rent is deducted from his salary "at a rate agreed with HM Treasury," per the report.

Densham, described as "a safe pair of hands," has been working for Queen Camilla since 2008. She became her private secretary in 2021.
