Pentagon Officials Say Aliens Could Be Visiting Our Solar System

As The X-Files insisted decades ago: Something may be out there. That's the message the Pentagon sent in a draft document last week, which says that aliens could be visiting our solar system and launching small probes to explore parts of the cosmos. UFOs attracted headlines and renewed interest last summer, when the Pentagon's new office for investigating unidentified airborne objects opened for business, and in January, when officials announced there had been a record number of UFO sightings in 2022.

The new draft research report—written by Sean Kirkpatrick, the director of that Pentagon office (All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office, or AARO), and Abraham Loeb, the chairman of Harvard University's astronomy department—was released on March 7, Fox News reported. Here's what it says and what one of the authors has to say about it.

Parent Craft With Smaller Probes Possible

The report says an alien "mothership" could be observing Earth and spawning smaller craft to take a closer look, similar to human space exploration. "An artificial interstellar object could potentially be a parent craft that releases many small probes during its close passage to Earth, an operational construct not too dissimilar from NASA missions," the report says. "These 'dandelion seeds' could be separated from the parent craft by the tidal gravitational force of the Sun or by a maneuvering capability."

A Mothership Sighting in 2017?

In 2005, Congress required NASA to find 90% of all objects near Earth that are larger than 140 meters. This resulted in the launch of Pan-STARRS telescopes, the report says. In 2017, the Pan-STARRS spotted an unusual interstellar object that was later named Oumuamua, or "scout" in Hawaiian.

The object was cigar-shaped, flat, and was moving away from the sun without showing a cometary tail, leading scientists to believe it was artificial. Loeb believes this could have been an alien parent craft. "We consider a possibility where an object as big as Oumuamua, which was a football field size, is a mothership," he said.

A Similar Object Landed on Earth

The report also noted that six months before Oumuamua came closest to Earth, a three-foot-long meteor crashed to Earth. It had an identical shape to 'Oumuamua."With proper design, these tiny probes would reach the Earth or other solar system planets for exploration, as the parent craft passes by within a fraction of the Earth-Sun separation — just like 'Oumuamua did," the authors wrote. "Astronomers would not be able to notice the spray of mini probes because they do not reflect enough sunlight for existing survey telescopes to notice them."

"We Just Have to Look Out"

Loeb told KTLA this week that if Oumuamua was a ship, there likely wasn't life on it. Instead, he believes it could have been operated by an artificial intelligence system "that stays dormant for that period and just gets activated when it comes close to its target." "Whether we live in such a reality or not is not a philosophical question, we just have to look out," he said.

Some online commenters expressed intrigue at the report, while others urged everyone to chill. "If that is true, then this is perhaps one of the most exciting moments in our known history. We are either getting together as humanity to ready for the fight for our own survival or to exponentially expand our understanding of the universe," wrote one man. "Not saying this can't be true…. Just a bit of caution. We don't know a lot of things about our own planet Earth, and it was just 100yrs ago that a great many people thought the 'northern lights' were spirits!" said another commenter.

"If you see a copy of a book laying around titled How to Serve Man, then start to worry…" joked another. "They are already here," declared one commenter. "There are a few people in my office that must have personal heaters going in the summer making it 90 degrees in their workspace. Humans don't do that. Lizard people do though."
