The show, which chronicles the reign of Queen Elizabeth, has tapped into pretty much every controversy and scandal surrounding the House of Windsor, including high-profile affairs and even the death of Princess Diana. According to a new source, at one point, Prince Philip even considered suing the streaming giant. According to Hugo Vickers, a royal historian, one storyline, in particular, bothered Prince Philip so much that he considered suing them and even consulted lawyers. He believed that the plot featured in the second season accused him of being responsible for his sister's death, which was not the case.
"I know Prince Philip consulted his lawyer about it, to ask 'what can I do about it?'" Vickers told the Sunday Times. "He was very upset about the way that was portrayed. He was human. He could be hurt like anybody else."
The episode revolves around the relationship Prince Philip had with his father, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark. It insinuated that he was responsible for the 1937 death of Princess Cecilie, who died in a plane crash.
Princess Cecilie was just 26 when she died in a plane crash with her husband, two sons, and newborn baby. At the time, she was on her way to visit her brother at the place where he was attending school.
The Crown episode suggested that she only took the flight because Phillip had been forbidden to visit her in Germany because he had misbehaved at school. "You're the reason we're all here, burying my favorite child," Philip's father said to him in the dramatization of the event.
