7 Things You Should Never Do if You're Going Bald

Avoid these mistakes.

Seeing a receding hairline in the mirror or finding more hair than usual in the shower can be nerve-wracking. The best thing you can do if you're experiencing hair loss is to avoid making it worse. But in a phenomenon as steeped in myths, quackery, and emotion as hair loss, that can be more difficult than it may seem. These are seven things you should never do if you're going bald, according to the experts.

1
Avoid the Dermatologist

A common mistake for men who are losing their hair is using hair growth serums you can buy in stores or online "that promise quick fixes but lack the essential ingredients to truly stimulate follicles," says New York City-based cosmetologist Anna Peterson. "Additionally, the allure of hair growth shampoos can often mislead, as most don't penetrate the scalp deep enough to make a tangible difference." Her recommendation: "I urge men to seek dermatological advice, considering treatments like microneedling with growth factors or even laser therapies, which have shown tangible results."

2
Lean on Hair-Growth Supplements

"Many men resort to over-the-counter hair growth supplements in the hope of quick results. However, these supplements may not have scientifically proven benefits and can even cause side effects," says Dr. Anna Chacon, a board-certified dermatologist based in Miami. "It's important for men to avoid quick fixes and instead opt for scientifically proven methods. Seeking professional help is crucial in managing hair loss effectively. Every individual is different, and what works for one may not work for another."

3
Do Nothing

"The most important thing to avoid is inaction. Lots of men notice their hair thinning or receding and do nothing, hoping it will simply stop," says Matt Fielding of Bald and Happy. "Meanwhile, they live in a constant state of anxiety over what others think and whether people have noticed their rapidly receding hairline or emerging bald spot. The best way to get over this perpetual worrying is to take action. You don't have to shave your head, but it's important to make your mind up what you're going to do."  He adds: "Some people opt for a hair transplant, while others try medication to temporarily slow or stop the progression of hair loss. There are even options like SMP (a hair tattoo) and a hair system, or you can just brave the shave. The most important thing is to stop being passive and take control of the situation. Own it before it starts to own you."

4
Abuse Your Scalp

"Avoid intense hair treatments including bleaching, hair dye, and heating tools if you think you may be becoming bald," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Enrizza P. Factor. "Your hair may also be affected by hairstyles like braids or tight ponytails. Washing your hair and scalp frequently will help keep your scalp healthy."

5
Stress Out

"Worrying excessively about hair loss can lead to stress, which can further accelerate hair loss," says Chacon.

6
Act Too Soon

"A lot of the time, men panic when they see their hairline start to recede, not realizing that it happens to most people and doesn't always mean they'll go bald," says Fielding. "Often, the appearance of a mature hairline is confused with a receding hairline. The lesson here is not to shave your head as soon as you notice any movement in your hairline. Instead, monitor it over time before you self-diagnose yourself into any drastic action."

7
Lose Confidence

"Maintaining a healthy scalp, opting for shorter hairstyles, and embracing the natural process can also be empowering," says Peterson. "Above all, confidence remains the best accessory a man can wear."
