15 Most Popular Plastic Surgery Procedures in America
Is plastic surgery on your mind? Explore the hottest trends and get inspired.
Blame it on the omnipresence of camera phones, social media, or just decades of publicity, more American men and women are having plastic surgery procedures than ever. About 26.2 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic and reconstructive procedures were performed in the U.S. last year. If you've lingered over your appearance on a Zoom call or Instagram shot and wondered if you should invest in a nip there or a tuck there, you may also wonder how many of your peers have done the same. These are the 15 most popular plastic surgery procedures in the U.S., according to 11,000 doctors surveyed by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
One of the procedures around which plastic surgery originally concentrated—the medical specialty was named for the Greek word plastikos, meaning to form or to mold—scar revision accounted for 50,930 procedures in 2022. This was a 9% decline from 2019, possibly because other, less invasive procedures can now improve scars.
There were 52,488 lower-face procedures last year, down 29% from 2019.
Sagging eyelids or undereye bags can make you look less-than-alert and are considered some of the most telltale signs of aging—and they're especially noticeable on Zoom. No wonder, then, that 115,261 eyelid procedures were done in 2022, a 13% increase from three years earlier.
Age and childbearing can be a drag. But more and more women are choosing to turn back time with a breast lift. Surgeons performed 143,364 of these procedures last year, a 30% surge from 2019.
In all, 151,641 breast reconstructions were done in 2022, a 12% increase from three years earlier.
Tummy tucks—in which fat and excess skin are removed from the abdomen via an incision at the waist—accounted for 161,948 procedures last year. That's up 37% from 2019; it's the third-highest increase on the list.
About 204,412 hand surgery procedures were performed in 2022, about the same as in 2019.
Breast enhancement has been a hugely popular cosmetic procedure ever since implants were popularized in the mid-1970s. And 298,568 procedures were performed last year, up 4% from 2019. But the tide may be turning in 2023: "Overall, breast augmentation is declining as a surgical procedure," Dr. Brian Reagan of CosmetiCare in Newport Beach, California, told Fox News. "This is due to a more natural, smaller-chested look being more popularized," he went on. "We often see these trends change throughout the years."
Call it a Mommy Makeover, a Daddy Do-Over, or desirable no matter what your reproductive status, these procedures to remove stubborn pockets of fat have become increasingly sophisticated, using advanced technology such as lasers and smaller cannulas. There were 325,669 lipo procedures in 2022, an increase of 23% from 2019.
In all, 344,697 of these procedures were done in 2022, a 2% decrease from 2019.
Attribute it to the popularity of Instagram or the existence of Angelina Jolie, lip augmentation with injectables is America's fifth most popular choice among both women and men, with 1,378,631 procedures done in 2022.
Lasers are used to resurface skin, smoothing wrinkles and scars, and certain types are purported to boost the production of collagen beneath the surface, leading to a more youthful plumpness and glow. In all, 2,915,199 of these procedures were done in 2022.
Other skin resurfacing procedures, such as peels and microneedling, are said to smooth skin and reduce the signs of aging. The survey found 3,322,292 such procedures were done last year.
Increasingly sought after by both women and men, fillers can smooth wrinkles, plump sagging cheeks, define jawlines, and even seemingly straighten noses. A total of 4,883,419 of these procedures were done in 2022, up 70% from three years earlier.

Popularly known as Botox, this cosmetic intervention—in which an injectable solution minimizes wrinkles and frown lines by temporarily desensitizing muscles under the skin—is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the U.S. Overall, 8,736,591 procedures were done in 2022, a whopping 73% increase from 2019.
